“I am naturally seduced by language that expresses sheer optimism. I can't help it. For this exhibition, however, I had fun playing with language tinged with a bit of uncertainty and tension as well. The Sandwich Boards are stand-ins for the back-and-forth of a conversation. I like that the sandwich board has two sides to advertise. I imagine that the Sandwich Boards are having a hard time finding its message. Each side is in conversation with the other, fighting with itself, uncertain, maybe a bit confused. It’s definitely something we can all relate to. I was also inspired to make sandwich boards because I heard that Intersection can't have one outside its doors on Mission Street because its building is a historic landmark. To me this is really unfortunate because there are so many cool things happening inside and you wouldn't really know it otherwise.” – Susan O’Malley
