In Modern Ruins (Popular Cannibals), Stephanie Syjuco recreates archetypes of modernist furniture by well-known designers including Charles and Ray Eames and Marcel Breuer using materials sourced from San Francisco’s city “dump” through her 4-month residency at Recology San Francisco. Her sculpture replicates the expensive furniture using scraps of metal, foam, wood, and anything else she had access to within the vicinity. Through this body of work, Syjuco explores ideas of production, consumption, class, and economies.
