Curatorial Projects > Once at Present: Contemporary Art of the Bay Area Iranian Diaspora (2019)

Cyrus Yoshi Tabar
Memories, 2018
Video installation, total running time 8:15

As a new father of a son, Tabar examines the very notion of fatherhood and intergenerational trauma by contrasting the relationships between his grandfather, father, himself, and his son. Broken up into a mosaic of CRT monitors, home movies and photographs ricochet between his father’s family in Iran and his new family in Los Angeles, CA. Recollections of a family’s story are fragmented and full of mysteries. For each member of a family there exists unique truths that weave in and out of synchronicity. Like a puzzle, Memories evokes the search to piece together the elusive truths of family history.
