Curatorial Projects > Once at Present: Contemporary Art of the Bay Area Iranian Diaspora (2019)

Shaghayegh Cyrous
The Sun Will Rise the Next Day, 2019
Video installation, total running time 10:37

A list of names of hundreds of women and men incarcerated as prisoners of conscience in Iran over the past eight years (2011-19) are silently projected, only visible with the presence of a body acting as the screen, making their struggles visible through becoming a physical witness to their otherwise forgotten acts of courage. Through intensive research, Cyrous has been painstakingly compiling the names of political prisoners, ranging in age from 19 to 80, who have fought for the peaceful expression of their political, religious, sexual, and cultural beliefs and identities.
